Michael joined Isle in October 2024 as the Head of Technical Services. He has 15-years professional experience with a strong technical background and well-established leadership skills. His experience spans from working in highly controlled environments such as accredited laboratories, working in academia developing sustainable technologies and at an early-stage technology company, to senior management in the water utility sector. Michael has previously worked at Dwr Cymru Welsh Water as the Principal Scientist supporting and leading a range of essential and strategic programmes. This included trade effluent, chemical investigations programme, reducing nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment, live water quality monitoring, delivering and growing the research and innovation programme, and supporting operational delivery and strategy. He is well-known for his tenacity, collaborative approach and able to bring positive disruption to a department and organisation. Alongside his work in the utility sector, Michael has previously volunteered in UKWIR as the co-lead for the Big Question sustainable wastewater treatment, he has chaired his local Community Center and he is a regular guest speaker at Swansea University.
Expertise
Michael’s expertise is in wastewater treatment such as organic and hydraulic loading calculations, assessing engineering options for growth or tightening of permit parameters. This includes root-cause analysis, outline and implementation of solutions including governance and training and development. He also has a keen interest in phosphorus removal and recovery, industrial wastewater treatment, water recycling and re-use and resource recovery.
