Isle Stands Against Racism
While conventional business practices encourage neutrality and keeping politics/personal beliefs at a minimum, the continued acts of injustice towards Black people require a clear position on this significant issue. We at Isle Utilities share in the sadness and outrage that has resulted from the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others before them by those sworn to protect them. Further, we stand in solidarity with those protesting peacefully for equality, and we wholeheartedly condemn racial injustice and discrimination of all kinds.
The issue of black inequality is not just an American issue, it is a global issue. With global offices in 10 countries, a team that speaks over 25 combined languages, and staff representation across 30+ nationalities, Isle is truly a multi-cultural and diverse organization through and through. Yet only 2% of Isle’s workforce is black. We know we can do better to further promote diversity within our very own organization.
We believe accelerating the adoption of innovative solutions will improve communities, the environment, and protect public health around the world but recognize that we cannot achieve our full potential without considering the broader ecosystem. We vow to do our part to fight racism by starting within the following areas of influence:
Support and further connections between Black entrepreneurs and Black investors.
Elevate the leadership and advancements by Black water professionals.
Address the nexus of environmental justice, water, and innovation to achieve true equity in improving communities, environment, and protect public health.
Speak out against words and acts of hate and discrimination. Period.
Humankind is one species, and despite all our remarkable advancements and innovation, there is clearly an imbalance. The late Carl Sagan, whose protégé is non-other than Neil deGrasse Tyson, gave an inspiring talk back in 1990 about his perspective of the Pale Blue Dot, a photo taken from 3.6B miles away by space probe Voyager 1. His message to “deal more kindly with one another” certainly speaks to our short time on earth, and in tragic times like these, emphasizes the responsibility we all share for the planet and humanity. That blue dot is all of us, and systematic inequality towards our Black community requires all of our attention.
