Responding to Disaster: Operators Without Borders Mobilize in the Wake of Hurricane Melissa
When natural disasters strike, the aftermath can be devastating, particularly for the most vulnerable among us. Hurricane Melissa has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean, and communities are struggling to return to a semblance of normalcy. In response, Operators Without Borders (OWB) is launching a critical mission to restore vital water services, a testament to the resilience and determination of human spirit and cooperation.
The Urgency of the Situation
As catastrophic images continue to emerge from Jamaica, the immediate threats are evident. Flooding and high winds have wreaked havoc, but hidden dangers, such as impaired access to clean water, threaten survivors with a secondary wave of crises. Valerie Jenkinson, Founder and Chair of OWB, underscores the severity: “We are seeing entire areas that look as if they’ve been wiped out by the flood.”
The Role of Operators Without Borders
In times of disaster, rapid response is essential. OWB provides critical expertise through volunteers primarily drawn from the water utility sector. These specialists are prepared to mobilize, leaving behind their daily lives and responsibilities, to support relief efforts where the need is greatest. As Valerie explains, “Our goal at Operators Without Borders is to restore services to the actual utilities as quickly as possible in both water and wastewater.”
The Mission and Its Challenges
For OWB, their mission involves deploying technical experts to assess and address immediate needs in water utility infrastructure. Valerie notes, “It’s mostly about fixing the valves, putting pumps, laying new pipe. A lot of their pipe is overground, not buried. So, we can imagine how much piping there will likely be needed.” Logistics are critical to the success of such operations, and they come with their set of challenges. Valerie Jenkinson emphasizes the readiness required: “We are waiting right now for airports to open up. We are on standby.”
Supporting the Effort
Funding remains a critical issue, as OWB relies heavily on donations to cover travel and logistical expenses. Each volunteer requires approximately $2,500 for travel, accommodations, and associated costs. Every dollar contributed directly supports these heroes in their efforts to restore essential services promptly.
How You Can Help
Jo Burgess encapsulates the crucial role that collective generosity plays in such times: “For the impact that person’s going to have, I think that’s amazing. So anyone listening, if you, obviously not many of us are in a situation where we can do $2,500 by ourselves, but that’s not a huge number. Only a few of us need to donate before we reach that kind of level.” Whether it’s a small donation or sponsoring a volunteer, every contribution is valuable. As Valerie reflects, “If you are in the water sector, these are your brothers and sisters in developing countries.” Your support can make a difference in restoring dignity and hope to affected communities.
