Sydney Water Infrastructure Technology Plan

Sydney Water Addresses Risk and Advances Resilience with Infrastructure Technology Plan

Isle worked closely with Sydney Water to create an Infrastructure Technology Plan to proactively manage their assets.

Sydney Water is Australia’s largest water utility serving 4.6 million people and managing an extensive asset base. Like most utilities worldwide, the scale of their  aging infrastructure exceeds funding available to replace it. Given the challenging nature of water and wastewater assets, a lack of visibility into asset health is a risk. An Infrastructure Technology Plan can address these challenges. It helps identify and prioritise fit-for-purpose technology to move towards predicting asset condition and enabling proactive, cost-effective interventions.

Isle was well placed to pair global leading practices with a deep assessment of Sydney Water’s current technology capabilities. This resulted in a comprehensive Infrastructure Technology Plan and Implementation Roadmap. Together, these align the business on key infrastructure technology initiatives to prioritise over the next 1 – 5 year time horizon. The approach ensures optimal resource allocation and targets high-value opportunities while managing risk and implementation readiness.

Benefits of Approach

  • Business engagement: interviewed over 100 staff including 20 Heads of Business, providing diverse perspectives and comprehensive insights.
  • Gap analysis: clearly defined the current state of technology capability and the required future state to manage high-risk, poor-performing assets.
  • Leading practice: identified global leading practices in advanced condition assessment, real-time performance monitoring and control, and enhanced scenario modelling.
  • Strategic prioritisation: ranked key technology intervention initiatives based on a desirability, feasibility and viabilities criteria.
  • Implementation roadmap: developed a detailed 5-year horizon mapping current research and technology initiatives with future technology intervention initiatives.
