Oil & Gas Industry Water Reuse

Streamlining water reuse solutions in the oil & gas industry

Recovering wash-water for reuse in the oil & gas industry

Practically every business in the world creates some form of wastewater. Finding more effective ways to reuse on-site wastewater conserves water, cuts costs and reduces environmental impact.

A global oil & gas company has developed a mineral carbonation process to sequester CO2 from its refineries. The CO2 is mineralized to produce a solid which can be used as a raw material in the construction industry. To achieve the required quality, the final product is rinsed to remove impurities. These impurities are mainly mineral salts that are released when soaking the product in demineralized water. After washing, the final product is ready to be used as a raw material for cement production.

The company worked with Isle to find the most attractive solution to recover wash-water for reuse. The goal was to find and assess technologies that would be cost-effective and with limited energy input.  Isle worked to assess different working principles for the desalination of water streams. We identified advanced reverse osmosis (RO) systems as the most economically and technically suitable solution.  Our team screened advanced RO systems and made recommendations for the best solution for the customer’s wash water recover application. Isle’s recommended solution was projected to recover 80% of the wash water with an estimated energy input of <2kWh/m3.

Benefits of Approach/Innovation
  • Targeted Recovery: Achieved approximately 80% recovery of wash-water, reducing water consumption.
  • Cost Effective: Cost-effective solution, with an estimated energy input of <2kWh/m3 and a cost of €0.6/m3.
  • Improved Compliance: Minimized discharge costs by managing the remaining brine stream in line with regulatory standards.
Specialist Services Involved:
  • Technology Assessment: Our team evaluated eight desalination principles and selected advanced RO systems for optimal performance.
  • Supplier Collaboration: Isle collaborated with tech suppliers to identify the most suitable solutions for wash water recovery.
Outcomes:
  • Increased Efficiency: Recommended solution enabled client to reuse effluent from the cleaning water operations in their mineral carbonation process.
  • Operational Efficiency: Streamlined refinery processes with a four week project track record, enhancing overall operational efficiency and resilience.
