PyroPure receives CIWM Environmental Excellence Award
Curzon Park capital-backed PyroPure Ltd receives CIWM Environmental Excellence Award for innovative practice
Specialist waste technology company PyroPure Ltd has won the Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM) Environmental Excellence Award for Innovative Practice, in conjunction with Wandsworth Borough Council.
PyroPure® is a new system that can be installed in a building to destroy the non-recyclable solid waste produced, avoiding the need for it to be stored, collected, transported or disposed of in large scale facilities. This has major environmental benefits including eliminating emissions from waste transport and landfill. The technology, invented by PyroPure Ltd, is a unique thermal process which provides clean, quiet and safe destruction of the waste in a small unit that is simple to operate or can be fully automated. The system reduces the waste to a small, sterile residue which is automatically flushed to the sewer.
The Hampshire-based company, which is backed by the Sustainable Technology Fund – managed by Curzon Park Capital – received the national award for its work with Wandsworth to establish the technical feasibility of using the PyroPure® system to deliver safe, onsite destruction of residual solid waste from blocks of flats in the Borough.
Cédriane de Boucaud, director of Curzon Park Capital, said: "PyroPure has a disruptive technology which will change the way we manage waste. On site disposal of non-recyclable waste is the market's 'holy grail' – reducing the need for waste transport and landfill. This award is a welcome validation of the true innovation it brings to waste management."
The PyroPure® technology underwent a five-week trial in the basement chamber of a 15-storey apartment block in autumn 2009, receiving waste from 56 apartments via a chute and processing it automatically.
The system separated glass and metal recyclables effectively from the rest of the waste so that they could be emptied into recycling bins, thereby increasing the recycling rate.
The awards were judged by eight independent judges from organisations including the CIWM, Waste Resources Action Programme, Environmental Services Association, Health and Safety Executive and the Construction Research and Information Association.
Since the trial PyroPure Ltd has developed and tested a new PP5 version of the product, with recovery of substantial quantities of heat energy being a major new feature. The PyroPure® PP5 system has been subject to an intensive programme of laboratory tests. Real wastes of various types are now being tested at the PyroPure Ltd premises under a Position Statement issued by The Environment Agency.
A set of installations and demonstration trials is planned on prospective customer premises in the New Year, including Imperial College laboratory wastes, Lynwood Care Centre (operated by BEN, the automotive charity) waste and Network Rail's National Management Training Centre waste.
Julian Entwistle, Sales & Marketing Director for PyroPure, said: "We are very pleased and proud to have won this award which represents another important endorsement of the environmental credentials of the PyroPure® system."
"We are particularly pleased that this is for the practical demonstration of its use in a real-life situation and grateful to Wandsworth Borough Council for having collaborated with us on this project and offered the opportunity to trial this innovative technology."
